Lightning Network protocol
Overview
The Lightning Network is Bitcoin's principal layer-2 payment system, built on bidirectional payment channels. Two parties open a channel by committing bitcoin to a multi-signature address; from that point they can exchange an effectively unlimited number of payments off-chain by updating the channel's balance, settling to the Bitcoin blockchain only when the channel closes. The amount committed at channel creation is its channel capacity and sets the maximum value that can move through it. Payments do not need a direct channel between sender and receiver: they route across a network of interconnected nodes, settling instantly without waiting for block confirmations. Aggregate network capacity is the standard health metric — it reached a record 5,606 BTC, with Amboss reporting a peak of 5,637 BTC the following day, worth roughly $490 million — after a sharp rise driven partly by major exchanges including Binance and OKX adding BTC to channels. Lightning Labs is a principal implementer, and its Taproot Assets protocol, upgraded to v0.7 with reusable addresses and an auditable supply feature, lets assets such as stablecoins be issued on Bitcoin and moved over Lightning channels. Lightning capacity had declined for around a year before rising sharply in November and December, setting a new all-time high of 5,606 BTC (peaking at 5,637 BTC per Amboss, about $490 million) as exchanges including Binance and OKX added liquidity to channels. Lightning Labs has extended the network beyond bitcoin payments with Taproot Assets, reaching v0.7 with reusable addresses and auditable supply.
