Orbit Chain protocol
Overview
Orbit Chain is a South Korean cross-chain interoperability protocol whose Orbit Bridge was created by Ozys, the blockchain firm behind the Klaytn-ecosystem DEX KlaySwap and Belt Finance. It is best known for a major security failure: on 31 December 2023 Orbit Bridge was drained of more than $81 million — reported at $81.5-81.6 million — in the first large crypto hack of 2024. The attacker obtained control of seven of the bridge's ten multisig signers. Losses were mostly stablecoins, including roughly $30 million USDT, $10 million USDC and $10 million DAI, plus about 231 WBTC (around $10 million) and 9,500 ETH (around $21.5 million). Ozys subsequently accused its former chief information security officer of weakening firewall settings before the attack, alleging unauthorised changes made on 22 November — two days after the CISO's resignation request — that went unnoticed until 10 January. Ozys notified South Korea's National Intelligence Service and said it was investigating possible involvement by the North Korea-linked Lazarus Group. Orbit Bridge, built by Ozys, was exploited on 31 December 2023 for more than $81 million after the attacker gained seven of ten multisig signatures. Ozys later alleged its former CISO had sabotaged firewall settings on 22 November, undetected until 10 January 2024, and reported the incident to South Korea's National Intelligence Service while probing possible Lazarus Group involvement.
