Overview
PancakeSwap is a decentralised exchange whose automated market maker is the largest on BNB Chain and which has since expanded across multiple networks, with CAKE as its native token. The AMM has gone through several architectural generations, culminating in PancakeSwap v4 (branded PancakeSwap Infinity), which launched in May 2025 on Ethereum and BNB Chain with plans to expand further. v4 introduces multiple pool types — a concentrated liquidity AMM (CLAMM) and a liquidity book AMM (LBAMM) — alongside modular smart-contract 'hooks' that let developers customise trading and liquidity logic, and comprehensive fee control for liquidity providers. It also adds a limit order book, a singleton contract architecture that project materials say cuts gas costs by up to 99%, and AI-driven smart routing intended to improve fill rates and reduce slippage. The stated goal is to address inflexible pricing models, impermanent loss and high on-chain gas costs. PancakeSwap grew into BNB Chain's dominant AMM and iterated through successive versions. Version 4 (PancakeSwap Infinity) launched in May 2025 on Ethereum and BNB Chain, adding hooks, multiple pool types (CLAMM and LBAMM), a limit order book and a singleton architecture. It has also launched adjacent products such as Springboard.
