Seaport protocol
Overview
Seaport is an open-source marketplace protocol for buying and selling NFTs onchain, developed by OpenSea and released in 2022. Every order is expressed as two components: an 'offer', listing the assets the order creator is willing to give up, and a 'consideration', listing what must be received in return; both sides can include ETH, ERC-20, ERC-721 or ERC-1155 tokens, which allows bundles, multi-recipient fee splits and barter-style trades in a single order. The protocol validates that all parties receive their expected items before a transaction completes, and it fulfils all trades on the OpenSea website: when a user makes an offer through OpenSea, the site constructs the corresponding Seaport order, watches Seaport events, surfaces incoming offers to the NFT owner, and on acceptance generates and submits a matching counter-listing for execution. Seaport is published openly on GitHub under the ProjectOpenSea organisation, is usable by any marketplace rather than only OpenSea, and its usage is tracked publicly on Dune Analytics. OpenSea built and released Seaport in 2022 as the successor to its earlier Wyvern-based marketplace contracts, and it became the most widely used NFT trading protocol.
