Overview
Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK), the Financial Services Authority, is Indonesia's independent integrated financial regulator, created under Law No. 21 of 2011 to consolidate supervisory powers previously split between Bank Indonesia and the Capital Market Supervisory Agency. It began operating on 31 December 2012 with responsibility for capital markets and non-bank financial institutions, and took over banking supervision from the central bank on 1 January 2014. It is headquartered in Jakarta in the Soemitro Djojohadikusumo Building and supervises Indonesia's banks — including 14 conventional and 6 Islamic banks among its member institutions — alongside insurers, capital markets and non-bank finance. The 2023 Financial Sector Development and Strengthening Law expanded its enforcement authority. Its leadership changed abruptly in early 2026: chairman Mahendra Siregar resigned on 30 January 2026 along with two senior officials after stock market volatility on the Jakarta Stock Exchange, and Friderica Widyasari Dewi now serves as chairman. OJK was created by Law No. 21 of 2011 and launched on 31 December 2012, absorbing capital markets and non-bank supervision, then taking banking supervision from Bank Indonesia on 1 January 2014. The 2023 Financial Sector Development and Strengthening Law broadened its enforcement powers. On 30 January 2026 chairman Mahendra Siregar resigned with two other senior officials following Jakarta Stock Exchange volatility; Friderica Widyasari Dewi became chairman.
