Scroll chain
Overview
Scroll is an Ethereum layer-2 network that uses zero-knowledge proofs — a zkEVM rollup whose defining claim is bytecode-level EVM equivalence, meaning contracts compiled for Ethereum mainnet deploy and run on Scroll without recompilation or modification. It was publicly developed for over a year alongside the Ethereum Foundation's Privacy and Scaling Explorations group, and its co-founders include Sandy Peng, Ye Zhang and Haichen Shen. The architecture has three parts: Scroll Nodes (sequencer, coordinator and relayer), a Roller Network of proof generators, and rollup and bridge contracts on Ethereum L1 that verify proofs and move assets. A pre-alpha testnet went live in July 2022 and mainnet launched in October 2023. At the time the CoinMarketCap Academy profile was written, Scroll held over $748 million in total value locked, making it the third-largest Ethereum L2 and the largest zkEVM chain by TVL. Its SCR token launched on 22 October 2024, following an airdrop snapshot on 19 October 2024, with a 1 billion total supply of which 35% is allocated to ecosystem growth and 15% to airdrops. Scroll began as a research-heavy zkEVM effort built in the open with the Ethereum Foundation's Privacy and Scaling Explorations group, opened a pre-alpha testnet in July 2022, and launched mainnet in October 2023. The SCR governance token launched on 22 October 2024 with an airdrop to early users, testnet participants and ecosystem contributors, opening at roughly a $212 million market capitalisation.
