Jam technology
Overview
JAM, the Join-Accumulate Machine, is a proposed successor design to the Polkadot relay chain, first described by Gavin Wood in an RFC. It generalizes the relay chain into a permissionless, rollup-focused environment that accepts computation from other chains and folds the results into shared state, combining the properties of a rollup host and a smart contract platform. The name comes from CoreJAM -- Collect, Refine, Join, Accumulate -- where the Collect and Refine stages run off-chain and Join and Accumulate run on-chain. JAM uses the Polkadot Virtual Machine, a RISC-V based VM replacing WebAssembly, and is specified in the Gray Paper, with the Web3 Foundation running a JAM Prize programme for independent implementations.
