Actor Lazarus Group threat
Overview
The Lazarus Group is a state-sponsored cyber threat actor attributed to North Korea's Reconnaissance General Bureau, and is tracked under names including APT38 for the financially motivated sub-group that split off around 2016. It is responsible for some of the largest cryptocurrency thefts on record, including the roughly $600 million hack of the Ronin Bridge used by Sky Mavis's Axie Infinity and the approximately $100 million theft from Harmony's Horizon Bridge, which the FBI publicly attributed to the group in January 2023. Chainalysis and other analysts estimated North Korea-linked actors stole around $1.7 billion of cryptocurrency in 2022 alone. US authorities have said the proceeds are used to fund North Korea's weapons programmes.
