EIGEN token
Overview
EIGEN is the native token of EigenLayer, a protocol built on Ethereum that introduced restaking — a primitive letting stakers reuse their staked capital to make verifiable economic commitments to additional applications. EigenLayer's ecosystem has three roles: Restakers supply capital, Operators run the infrastructure and manage delegated stake, and Autonomously Verifiable Services (AVSs) are the applications that buy security commitments from that stake. Anyone can launch an AVS and request security permissionlessly, without a whitelist. The protocol accepts native ETH, liquid staking tokens, EIGEN itself and standard ERC-20s as restakable assets, and enforces commitments through a slashing system paired with rewards, so operators face real economic consequences for failing their obligations. EigenLayer is deployed on Ethereum mainnet, Base, and testnets including Sepolia, with functionality varying by chain. EigenLayer is built by Eigen Labs, which has since positioned it as the trust and security layer inside a broader product suite branded EigenCloud, alongside EigenCompute (verifiable app execution), EigenAI (deterministic inference) and EigenDA (data availability for rollups); EIGEN and ETH are staked to secure that stack in exchange for rewards. EigenLayer launched restaking on Ethereum and later added EIGEN as a stakable asset alongside ETH and LSTs. Eigen Labs subsequently repositioned the product line as EigenCloud, a verifiable cloud comprising EigenLayer, EigenCompute, EigenAI and EigenDA, with EigenLayer serving as its trust layer.
