Overview
OP is the native token of the Optimism Collective, the governance body behind the Optimism Ethereum layer-2 rollup and the OP Stack. Its principal use is governance: the Collective is organised into two houses, the Token House made up of OP holders (protocol upgrades, treasury allocation, ecosystem incentives) and the Citizens' House of community members focused on retroactive public goods funding. Holders can vote directly or delegate, and can vote to change the OP inflation rate, which defaults to 2% per year. OP launched in June 2022 with an initial total supply of 4.294 billion tokens, first airdropped to 248,699 unique addresses. Distribution was 25% ecosystem fund, 20% retroactive public goods funding, 19% core contributors, 17% investors and 19% airdrops and governance. In October 2022 Optimism introduced the OP Stack as open-source software for building layer 2s, which underpins the Superchain — a set of interoperable OP Stack chains intended to reduce liquidity fragmentation. OP launched in June 2022 with an airdrop to 248,699 addresses. A second airdrop in February 2023 reached 307,965 addresses and a fourth in February 2024 reached 22,998 addresses. The OP Stack was released in October 2022, forming the basis of the Superchain. A sixth airdrop round has been reported at 550 million OP.
