Overview
BNB Smart Chain (BSC) is the EVM-compatible smart contract blockchain launched by Binance in September 2020, after a first testnet in May 2020, to give developers a faster and cheaper alternative to Ethereum. It runs on Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA), a consensus mechanism combining staking with a limited validator set to produce blocks efficiently, and it is now the smart contract half of the wider BNB Chain, whose gas token is BNB. Because it is EVM-compatible, Ethereum tooling and contracts port over with minimal changes, which drove rapid DeFi and dApp growth. Its most serious incident was the October 2022 BSC Token Hub bridge exploit, in which an attacker became a bridge relayer and abused a verification-proof flaw in the merkelised IAVL tree used to validate bridge messages, minting 2,000,000 BNB — roughly $570-600 million notional at the time. All 44 validators were asked to halt the chain temporarily to contain the damage, and most of the minted BNB was frozen before it could leave the chain. BSC's first testnet ran in May 2020 and mainnet launched in September 2020 alongside the older Binance Chain (Beacon Chain); the two were later unified under the BNB Chain brand. On 7 October 2022 the BSC Token Hub bridge was exploited for 2,000,000 BNB, prompting a temporary chain halt by validators and a later resumption of bridge operations.
