Overview
Sui is a layer-1 delegated proof-of-stake blockchain launched by Mysten Labs, with mainnet going live on 3 May 2023. Its distinguishing design is an object-centric data model: instead of Ethereum's account-based state, everything is an object with an owner, which lets the network identify independent transactions and execute them in parallel, giving horizontal scalability and sub-second finality. Sui is programmed in Sui Move, an evolution of the Move language originally developed at Meta's Novi for the Diem project, with built-in safety features aimed at reducing common smart contract vulnerabilities. Mysten Labs was founded in late 2021 by five senior engineers — Evan Cheng, Adeniyi Abiodun, Sam Blackshear, George Danezis and Kostas Chalkias — several of whom co-developed Move at Novi. The company raised $336 million across two private rounds in 2022 before mainnet launch, with investors including a16z, Coinbase Ventures and Binance Labs. SUI is the network's native token.
