Overview
Starknet is a permissionless Ethereum layer-2 network built by StarkWare, launched in June 2021, on which developers deploy scalable decentralised applications. It uses STARKs — Scalable Transparent ARguments of Knowledge, a form of non-interactive zero-knowledge proof invented and commercialised by StarkWare — to prove the correctness of large batches of transactions succinctly to Ethereum, so the L1 verifies a proof rather than re-executing every transaction. Applications on Starknet are written in Cairo, a Turing-complete programming language created by StarkWare specifically for provable computation. Starknet is the permissionless sibling of StarkEx, StarkWare's earlier proprietary scaling engine that launched on Ethereum in June 2020 and powers dYdX, Sorare and Immutable X. Current Starknet documentation is organised around building applications, running nodes and becoming a validator, and learning the protocol including the S-two prover, and describes the network's scope as spanning both Ethereum and Bitcoin. StarkWare launched StarkEx, its permissioned scaling engine, on Ethereum in June 2020, then launched the permissionless Starknet platform in June 2021. Starknet's tooling has since expanded to node operation and validation, and its documentation now positions the network as serving both Ethereum and Bitcoin.
