Overview
StarkWare Industries is an Israeli cryptography company founded in 2018 and headquartered in Netanya, whose founders are Eli Ben-Sasson (chief executive and president), Uri Kolodny (a former chief executive), Michael Riabzev and Alessandro Chiesa. It commercialises STARK proofs — Scalable Transparent ARguments of Knowledge, a class of non-interactive zero-knowledge proof used to scale blockchains by replacing re-execution with succinct verification. Its two main products are StarkEx, a proprietary application-specific scaling engine launched on Ethereum in June 2020 and used by dYdX, Sorare and Immutable X, and Starknet, the permissionless general-purpose layer-2 platform launched in June 2021. StarkWare also created Cairo, a Turing-complete language for writing provable programs. The company raised a $30 million Series A led by Paradigm, a $75 million Series B in March 2021 plus $12 million from the Ethereum Foundation, a $50 million Series C in November 2021 at a $2 billion valuation, and a $100 million Series D in May 2022 at an $8 billion valuation. It employed 190 people. Founded in 2018, StarkWare shipped StarkEx to Ethereum mainnet in June 2020 and the permissionless Starknet in June 2021. Its valuation climbed from $2 billion at the November 2021 Series C to $8 billion at the May 2022 Series D, the peak of the last cycle.
