Overview
Citigroup Inc. is one of the largest US banking groups, formed on 8 October 1998 through the merger of Citicorp — the holding company for Citibank, whose lineage dates to 1812 — and Travelers Group, creating what was then the world's largest financial services organisation. It is headquartered at 388 Greenwich Street in New York City and reported $2.353 trillion of assets and roughly 229,000 employees in 2024. The group is organised principally around the Institutional Clients Group, covering investment and corporate banking, and Personal Banking and Wealth Management for retail and wealth clients. Citigroup received the largest TARP support of any US bank during the 2008 crisis, with the government backstopping $306 billion of loans and securities and injecting about $20 billion directly; the government exited its stake by December 2010 at a roughly $12 billion profit. Under Jane Fraser, appointed in 2021 and the first woman to lead a major US bank, Citi has been exiting consumer banking in multiple markets, and in January 2024 announced 20,000 job cuts. Citigroup was created by the 1998 Citicorp-Travelers merger, which required the repeal of Glass-Steagall-era restrictions. The 2008 financial crisis brought the largest TARP rescue of any US bank; the government fully exited by December 2010. The current era is defined by Jane Fraser's restructuring since 2021, including consumer-market exits and the January 2024 announcement of 20,000 job reductions.
