Overview
Citi Token Services is a blockchain-based product from Citi Treasury and Trade Solutions that converts institutional clients' bank deposits into digital tokens for instant, 24/7 cross-border payments, liquidity management and automated trade finance. The underlying blockchain is private, owned and managed by Citi itself, so clients do not need to run a node to use the service. Citi piloted the trade finance use case with shipping group Maersk and a canal authority, using smart contracts to replace paper-based guarantee processes and cutting transaction time from days to minutes, and separately ran a global cash management pilot allowing clients to move liquidity between Citi branches around the clock. The service has since been expanded: Citi announced a strategic expansion adding euro integration, with Citi Token Services now available from Dublin, Ireland, letting clients transfer both US dollars and euros at any hour to their own accounts and to third-party accounts at Citi branches globally. Citi launched Citi Token Services through its Treasury and Trade Solutions unit, following pilots in trade finance with Maersk and a canal authority and a global cash management pilot. It later announced a strategic expansion adding euro support and availability from Dublin, Ireland.
