Overview
Farcaster is a decentralised social protocol whose pitch is that developers can permissionlessly build and distribute social apps on shared, portable social data, rather than on a platform that can revoke API access. Its developer surface has three main pieces. Mini Apps — formerly known as Frames v2 — are applications that run inside the Farcaster feed itself, so an app can be used without leaving the social context it was shared into. Sign In with Farcaster (SIWF) is an authentication standard that lets third-party applications log users in with their Farcaster identity and read their social graph, making follower relationships portable across products. And Snapchain is the data layer: developers can query Farcaster network data, sync it into a local database via a replicator, or run a node for real-time access. The design intent is that no single client controls distribution — because the protocol is open, competing clients and apps can read and write the same social graph, which is the structural difference from centralised social networks. Farcaster's in-feed application format evolved from Frames into Mini Apps, and its data infrastructure is now served by Snapchain, with query, local-replication and node-level access paths for developers.
