Overview
Variant Fund is a US crypto-focused venture capital firm founded by Jesse Walden, previously an investment partner on Andreessen Horowitz's first crypto fund and leader of a16z's Crypto Startup School. Variant invests in 'the builders of the user-owned web' — early-stage crypto, DeFi and web3 companies and protocols. In July 2022 the firm announced $450 million raised across two vehicles: a $150 million seed fund and a $300 million opportunity fund for follow-on investment in existing portfolio companies. Partners associated with the firm have included Jesse Walden, Li Jin and Spencer Noon. Variant's earlier two funds raised $22.5 million and $110 million, and its portfolio has included Uniswap, Mirror, Magic Eden and Polygon. Reporting has also indicated Variant sought roughly $250 million for a fourth flagship fund. Variant was founded by Jesse Walden after his time at a16z crypto. Fund I raised $22.5 million and Fund II $110 million; in July 2022 the firm announced $450 million split between a $150 million seed fund and a $300 million opportunity fund.
