Overview
Komainu is a regulated digital asset custodian created as a joint venture between Japanese investment bank Nomura, digital asset manager CoinShares and hardware security company Ledger. It launched in June 2020 and is headquartered in Jersey, with offices in London, Dublin, Dubai and Singapore, providing institutional custody to exchanges, financial institutions, asset managers, government agencies and corporations. Its regulatory footprint is a core selling point: it is regulated by the Jersey Financial Services Commission, holds an MLR registration with the UK Financial Conduct Authority, is licensed by Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority, and has an OAM registration in Italy. In January 2025 Komainu raised $75 million in a strategic investment from Blockstream Capital Partners. It has also partnered with Crypto Garage to support institutional crypto adoption in Japan, and continues to expand internationally. Nomura, Ledger and CoinShares (formerly Global Advisors) announced a partnership to build a secure institutional custody solution, launching Komainu in June 2020 from Jersey. It subsequently added VARA licensing in Dubai, FCA MLR registration in the UK and an Italian OAM registration, collaborated with Crypto Garage in Japan in 2023, and raised $75 million from Blockstream Capital Partners in January 2025.
