Microsoft Corporation is an American multinational technology company founded on 4 April 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, and headquartered in Redmond, Washington. Satya Nadella has been chief executive since February 2014. The company reported revenue of $281.7 billion in 2025 and is one of the most valuable publicly traded companies in the world, having become the most valuable in January 2024. Its businesses span the Windows operating system family and the Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 productivity suites, the Azure cloud platform launched on 27 October 2008, enterprise software including SQL Server, the Xbox console line under a Microsoft Gaming division established in 2022, and services including LinkedIn (acquired 2016), GitHub (acquired 2018), Bing and Teams. Microsoft announced a multi-year, multi-billion dollar partnership with OpenAI on 23 January 2023 and completed its $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard on 13 October 2023. Its crypto and blockchain relevance is mainly indirect, through Azure hosting for blockchain infrastructure and Azure Quantum for quantum computing access. Founded by Gates and Allen in 1975, Microsoft came to dominate PC operating systems and office productivity software from the 1990s. Under Satya Nadella, CEO since February 2014, it pivoted toward cloud and AI, building Azure into a hyperscale platform, acquiring LinkedIn (2016), GitHub (2018) and Activision Blizzard (completed 13 October 2023), and forming a multi-billion dollar partnership with OpenAI announced on 23 January 2023.
