Overview
The Uniswap Foundation is a Delaware entity created by Uniswap governance in August 2022 to support open-source development around the Uniswap protocol and to reduce friction in its governance. It was proposed by Devin Walsh, a former Uniswap Labs executive, together with Kenneth Ng; Walsh serves as executive director. The creation proposal passed its final on-chain vote with more than 86 million UNI votes — about 99% of votes cast — in favour. The approved budget was $74 million, of which $60 million was allocated to the Uniswap Grant Program and $14 million to operating costs, plus a request for an additional 2.5 million UNI tokens (around $21.7 million at the time) to participate in governance; those tokens are revocable by the DAO and may not be used for anything other than governance. In its first year after the August 2022 launch, the foundation committed $5.6 million across 99 grants, with individual awards ranging from $20,000 to $50,000. Note the $74 million proposal drew mixed community reaction at the time. Devin Walsh and Kenneth Ng proposed the foundation in mid-2022; it was ratified in August 2022 by 86 million UNI votes (99% in favour) and incorporated in Delaware. Its first year of grantmaking produced 99 grants totalling $5.6 million.
