Overview
Uniswap Labs is the New York-based software company that builds the Uniswap decentralised exchange protocol, founded and led by Hayden Adams, a former Siemens mechanical engineer who deployed the first version of Uniswap on Ethereum on 2 November 2018 after being inspired by a blog post from Vitalik Buterin. The company develops the protocol contracts, the web interface and wallet, but the deployed protocol itself is governed by holders of the UNI token, which was introduced in 2020 and airdropped retroactively to early users. Uniswap Labs had raised $165 million by 2022 from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Paradigm Operations and Union Square Ventures. As of December 2024 Uniswap was the largest decentralised exchange and the seventh-largest crypto exchange overall by daily volume. Governance is coordinated with the Uniswap Foundation, set up in 2022 after 95% token-holder approval. Adams launched Uniswap in November 2018; the UNI governance token followed in 2020 with a retroactive airdrop. The Uniswap Foundation was established in 2022 to fund community governance and protocol development. In December 2025, governance approved the 'UNIfication' proposal, which introduced protocol fees and deflationary mechanics for UNI.
