Digital Currency Group fund
Overview
Digital Currency Group (DCG) is an American crypto investment and holding company founded in 2015 by Barry Silbert and headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut. It operates as a venture investor and, more importantly, as the parent of a portfolio of operating businesses: Grayscale Investments, the digital asset manager; Foundry, its North American bitcoin mining operation; Luno, a cryptocurrency exchange acquired in 2020; Yuma, a decentralised AI platform launched in November 2024; and Fortitude Mining, a self-mining subsidiary spun off in January 2025. Its assets under management were reported at $50 billion as of September 2021, and Mark Shifke became CFO in July 2023. DCG's most consequential episode was the failure of its lending arm: Genesis Global Capital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2023 with liabilities between $1 billion and $10 billion, DCG missed major loan payments to Genesis in May 2023, and in October 2023 the New York Attorney General sued DCG alleging a $1.1 billion fraud. A Genesis restructuring plan was approved in May 2024 with distributions beginning August 2024. DCG also sold CoinDesk to Bullish in November 2023 and has since refocused on core holdings while completing Genesis obligations.
