Overview
Polychain Capital is a crypto investment firm founded in 2016 by Olaf Carlson-Wee, who was Coinbase's first employee and its head of risk. It invests across both liquid token strategies through hedge funds and equity through venture vehicles, focused on blockchain protocols and companies. The firm managed roughly $5 billion with 32 employees as of 2024. Its own backers include Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Union Square Ventures and Founders Fund. Portfolio positions have included Coinbase, Kik Messenger and Tezos. Polychain reached $1 billion of assets under management by early 2018, but market declines cut that to roughly $591.5 million by the end of that year. It recovered to about $5 billion by 2024, and in May 2024 distributed returns to investors across several of its venture funds.
