Overview
The Cayman Islands is a self-governing British Overseas Territory in the western Caribbean comprising Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, with an estimated population of 90,577 in 2025 — the most populous British Overseas Territory. It is one of the world's principal offshore financial centres: roughly 100,000 companies are registered there, more than the number of residents, and the territory has never levied income tax, capital gains tax or any wealth tax, relying instead on indirect taxation including import tariffs of 5-22%. That tax neutrality, combined with English-derived company law and a familiar exempted-company and foundation-company toolkit, is why so many crypto protocol entities, token issuers and DAO wrappers are domiciled there. Tourism and finance together account for 50-60% of GDP, and 2023 GDP per capita of $97,750 was the highest in the Caribbean; 56% of the workforce was non-Caymanian at the 2021 census. The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) is the primary financial regulator, overseeing banking, insurance and investment activity.
