Overview
Andre Cronje is a South African developer who is one of DeFi's most prolific and controversial builders, best known for creating Yearn Finance and for architecting the Fantom network. He built Yearn (originally iEarn) as a yield aggregator that automatically routes deposits between lending protocols, and launched its YFI governance token in 2020 with no pre-mine or founder allocation. He was, in his own words, 'an originating technical architect of Fantom's working network' and later a director of Fantom and Chief Technology Officer of Sonic Labs, the entity that succeeded the Fantom Foundation - he has explicitly stated he was not a founder or co-founder of Fantom Foundation, the original FTM token project, or Sonic Labs. Cronje returned as Sonic Labs CTO in September 2025 after an earlier departure from DeFi. In August 2025 he founded Flying Tulip, an on-chain exchange combining spot trading, derivatives, lending and stablecoin functions, which closed a $200 million private round the following month at a $1 billion fully diluted valuation. He resigned from the Sonic Labs board on 19 June 2026 to focus on Flying Tulip. Cronje created Yearn Finance and its fair-launched YFI token in 2020, then stepped back from public DeFi development before returning to Fantom/Sonic. He rejoined Sonic Labs as CTO in September 2025, founded Flying Tulip in August 2025, and resigned from the Sonic Labs board on 19 June 2026. In his resignation statement he disclaimed authorship of Sonic's tokenomics, the FTM-to-S migration, the Sonic airdrop and the decision to decommission the Ethereum FTM representation.
