Overview

Yearn Finance is an Ethereum-based yield aggregator whose central product is the yVault: users deposit a single asset and the vault allocates it across DeFi strategies that harvest and compound yield on their behalf, functioning as an on-chain savings account with fully transparent accounting. Three vault generations exist: v1, the original single-strategy vaults using a `y` token prefix, now deprecated; v2, the long-running workhorse vaults that can run up to 20 strategies at once and are heavily used for Curve ecosystem pools, prefixed `yv`; and v3, built on the ERC-4626 tokenised-vault standard with improved safety and usability, prefixed `yv` for multi-strategy or `ys` for single-strategy vaults. Vaults charge a performance fee taken from yield at harvest and, in some cases, an annual management fee applied through share dilution; after YIP-69 the fee structure became dynamic, single-asset vaults typically carry no management fee, and factory-deployed vaults charge a 10% performance fee. Governance runs through the YFI token and its veYFI vote-escrow mechanism, with a forum and Snapshot voting. Yearn evolved from single-strategy v1 vaults into multi-strategy v2 vaults and then v3 vaults built on the ERC-4626 standard. Fee policy was overhauled by YIP-69 into a dynamic structure, and governance moved to veYFI vote-escrowed YFI.
