Overview
Hayden Adams is an American software developer and the creator of Uniswap, the largest decentralized exchange protocol on Ethereum. A former mechanical engineer at Siemens, he began building Uniswap after being encouraged to learn Solidity and taking inspiration from a blog post by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin describing an on-chain automated market maker. He deployed the first version of Uniswap on the Ethereum mainnet on 2 November 2018, replacing the traditional order book with a constant-product formula in which liquidity providers deposit token pairs into pools and traders swap against those pools. Adams founded Uniswap Labs in 2018 and remains its CEO; the company raised a total of $165 million by 2022 from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Paradigm, Union Square Ventures and ParaFi. Under his leadership Uniswap shipped v2, v3 and, on 31 January 2025, v4, and introduced the UNI governance token in 2020 via a retroactive airdrop to early users. In December 2025 Uniswap governance approved the 'UNIfication' proposal, switching on protocol fees and adding a revenue-linked UNI burn mechanism. Adams was laid off from his mechanical engineering job at Siemens in 2017 and started writing the Uniswap prototype shortly afterwards, funding early development through Ethereum Foundation grants. Uniswap v1 launched 2 November 2018, followed by v2, v3 and v4 (31 January 2025). The UNI token launched in 2020 with a retroactive distribution, and in December 2025 governance passed UNIfication to activate protocol fees and token burns.
