Overview
Samuel Benjamin Bankman-Fried, born 5 March 1992, is an American entrepreneur who co-founded the trading firm Alameda Research in 2017 and the cryptocurrency exchange FTX in April 2019. FTX grew to more than 130 international affiliates before collapsing in November 2022 amid a run on customer withdrawals; FTX and Alameda filed for bankruptcy on 11 November 2022 and he resigned as chief executive the same day. Arrested in the Bahamas in December 2022, he was convicted on 2 November 2023 on seven counts including wire fraud, securities fraud, commodities fraud and money laundering, and in March 2024 was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to forfeit $11 billion.
