Arbitrum Orbit protocol
Overview
Arbitrum Orbit is the framework for launching customisable layer-2 and layer-3 blockchains built on Arbitrum technology, now documented under the name 'Arbitrum chains'. Teams can configure execution, fee models, governance, data availability, validation and other chain parameters to fit an application or business, and anchor security to Ethereum rather than bootstrapping an independent validator set — which converts security from a fixed cost into a variable, usage-based expense. The main economic draw is that a chain operator captures fee revenue that a general-purpose L1 would hand to validators, with direct control over custom gas tokens, fee policy and revenue capture. Configuration options include block times as low as 100 milliseconds (250ms by default), multiple data availability models (Rollup, AnyTrust or external DA), sequencing and MEV controls, permissioning and compliance features, and privacy protections. Chains offer sub-second soft finality, configurable hard finality on Ethereum within minutes, and native withdrawals in as little as 15 minutes. Despite the 'app chain' framing, an Arbitrum chain can host one app, many apps, or none, and can be public or private. The Orbit branding has given way to 'Arbitrum chains' in current documentation. The framework supports a phased launch-and-migrate path in which teams prove a concept on Arbitrum One before graduating to their own dedicated chain.
