Overview
AggLayer is Polygon's cross-chain interoperability protocol, designed to connect the liquidity and users of heterogeneous blockchains through a single protocol rather than through a patchwork of bridges. It delivers four core properties. Unified liquidity means assets keep their original identity when they move, so users do not end up holding wrapped derivatives of the same token on every chain. Atomic cross-chain operations mean a transaction either succeeds on every connected chain or fails entirely, eliminating partial states. Security is enforced by pessimistic proofs, which guarantee that a compromised chain cannot withdraw more than it deposited, so damage is contained to that chain rather than spreading across the network. And chain sovereignty means connected blockchains keep their own architecture and governance. AggLayer ships by default with every chain built using the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK), while independent chains can integrate separately, and it now supports non-EVM chains - Miden joined as a connected chain. It also underpins the Open Money Stack's cross-chain payment infrastructure, supplying the atomicity and unified liquidity that cross-chain payments require. Polygon developed AggLayer as the unifying interoperability layer for its CDK chain ecosystem, introducing pessimistic proofs to bound the damage a compromised chain can cause and later extending support beyond EVM chains, with Miden joining as a connected chain.
