Overview
UMA's Optimistic Oracle V3 is a general-purpose 'assertion' oracle that lets any smart contract post a claim about the real world onchain and have it accepted unless someone challenges it. A requester submits a data request with resolution instructions, a proposer reward, a bond size and a challenge-period (liveness) duration; a proposer answers and posts a bond, and if nobody disputes during the challenge window the answer settles as correct and the proposer is refunded plus rewarded. Disputers must post their own bond, refundable if they are proven right, and a disputed assertion is escalated to UMA's Data Verification Mechanism, where staked UMA holders vote in 24-hour commit-and-reveal rounds and a resolution requires at least a 65% majority of staked UMA behind one outcome, with slashing and rewards to incentivise honest voting. UMA states that roughly 99.8% of requests settle optimistically without ever reaching the DVM. V3 generalises this into a data assertion framework with pluggable 'Escalation Managers' that let integrators customise who may assert, who may dispute and how disputes are arbitrated, and UMA provides a sandboxed environment for testing the dispute flow. Documented integration patterns include prediction markets, insurance contracts and generic data assertions. Optimistic Oracle V3 succeeded UMA's earlier optimistic oracle versions, replacing the price-request-centric interface with a generic assertion API and adding Escalation Managers for customisable dispute handling.
