Overview
UMA is an optimistic oracle and dispute-arbitration system that lets arbitrary types of data be brought on-chain and used as a canonical source of truth by smart contracts. It works on an assertion-and-challenge model: a requester asks for data, a proposer posts an answer backed by a bond, and if the answer goes undisputed through a liveness window it is finalised; if it is disputed, resolution escalates to the Data Verification Mechanism, where UMA token holders vote and are rewarded for honest participation. Two oracle versions are in production — OOv2 and OOv3 — aimed at different use cases spanning prediction markets and cross-chain infrastructure. UMA is developed by Risk Labs Foundation, which also builds Across Protocol, and Across relies on the UMA oracle for its security. Governance runs through UMA Improvement Proposals (UMIPs) for design changes and the UMA DAO for treasury decisions. UMA evolved from synthetic-asset infrastructure into a general-purpose optimistic oracle, shipping successive oracle versions (OOv2 and OOv3). Risk Labs, its core contributor, later launched Across Protocol, which is secured by the UMA oracle.
