Overview
Gnosis Chain is an Ethereum-compatible layer-1 network that began life as the xDai Chain and merged into the Gnosis ecosystem after a 2021 community vote. Its native gas token is xDAI, a dollar-pegged stable asset bridged from Ethereum, while GNO is the staking asset used to secure the network. The chain originally ran POSDAO, a delegated proof-of-stake consensus, and transitioned to a permissionless proof-of-stake design mirroring Ethereum's own Merge of 15 September 2022, with a Gnosis Beacon Chain providing consensus. Under the new design validators stake GNO — sources describe validators staking 1 GNO per validator key with a 32 GNO deposit structure analogous to Ethereum's 32 ETH — and are selected to propose blocks and attest within committees. To bring xDai holders across, Gnosis funded a swap contract exchanging xDai's STAKE token for GNO. The Gnosis Chain documentation portal notes participation from over 200,000 nodes. The network launched as xDai Chain, a stable-gas Ethereum sidechain using POSDAO. In late 2021 xDai and GnosisDAO agreed to merge, with STAKE swapped for GNO. The chain then moved from proof-of-authority/DPoS to a permissionless proof-of-stake consensus via the Gnosis Beacon Chain merge, closely mirroring Ethereum's Merge, materially expanding and decentralising the validator set.
