BBVA company
Overview
BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria) is one of Spain's two largest banks and a major international financial group, tracing its origin to Banco de Bilbao, founded 28 May 1857 in Bilbao. Its present form dates from the 1999 merger of BBV — itself created by the 1988-89 merger of Banco de Bilbao and Banco de Vizcaya — with Argentaria, the state bank created in 1991 and privatised between 1993 and 1998. The group is dual-headquartered in Bilbao and Madrid, with operational command at Madrid's Ciudad BBVA complex. As of 31 December 2025 it reported €859.57 billion in assets, 127,174 employees, 81.2 million customers and 5,642 offices, with its largest franchises in Spain, Mexico, Turkey and South America. In 2019 it unified its global brand, retiring local names such as Bancomer in Mexico, Francés in Argentina, Continental in Peru and Compass in the United States. BBVA has become one of the most crypto-forward large European banks: in July 2025 it launched cryptocurrency trading and custody for retail clients in Spain under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), and in September 2025 it announced it would use Ripple's custody technology to expand institutional services. Key milestones: Banco de Bilbao (1857) and Banco de Vizcaya (1901) merged into BBV in 1988-89; the BBV-Argentaria merger in 1999 created BBVA; a single global brand replaced local names in 2019. On digital assets, BBVA opened retail crypto trading and custody in Spain in July 2025 under MiCA and adopted Ripple's custody solution for institutional clients in September 2025.
