xDai chain
Overview
xDai is the former name of what is now Gnosis Chain, an EVM-compatible layer-1 built around cheap, stable-value transactions. The chain's original design point — and the source of the xDai name — was that gas is paid in a dollar-stable token rather than a volatile asset, which keeps transaction costs predictable; the network advertises fees around $0.0000003 per swap. Security comes from a large, deliberately accessible validator set: gnosis.io reports 145K+ validators, with staking open from roughly $145 of stake and an advertised 8.54% staking APY, and claims 100% uptime. The GNO token serves as both the staking asset and the governance token, with holders voting through the DAO via the forum and Snapshot. Gnosis Chain's stated strategic focus is connecting local-currency stablecoins to global liquidity, on the argument that over 90% of stablecoin volume is USD-denominated while 95% of the world's people save, spend and earn in other currencies. Its established ecosystem includes Safe (the multisig standard), POAP and CoW Protocol, and Gnosis Ventures has funded 80+ early-stage projects. The xDai chain was merged into the Gnosis ecosystem and rebranded as Gnosis Chain, adopting GNO as the staking and governance token while keeping the stable-value gas model that gave xDai its name. The xDAI bridge has since completed a USDS migration.
