Overview
Aave DAO is the decentralised autonomous organisation that governs the Aave protocol, the largest DeFi lending platform by deposits. Aave itself began in 2017 as ETHLend, founded by Finnish lawyer Stani Kulechov, operating a peer-to-peer lending model; it relaunched in January 2020 under the name Aave — Finnish for 'ghost' — replacing peer-to-peer matching with pooled liquidity. Users deposit assets such as ETH, USDC or DAI into pools which serve as collateral for loans; depositors earn variable interest and borrowers must post collateral exceeding the value of the loan. The protocol offers variable and stable interest rates and flash loans, uncollateralised loans that must be repaid within a single transaction. In 2023 the DAO launched GHO, a decentralised stablecoin backed by protocol collateral. Governance runs through the AAVE token: holders vote on protocol changes — asset listings, risk parameters, treasury deployment — through the DAO, making Aave an open-source project governed by its community rather than a company. In 2025 the platform recorded €40.3 billion in net deposits and was confirmed as the largest DeFi lending platform by deposits.
